Prep: 10 mins
Cook Time: 10mins
Servings: 4 cups
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 liter organic milk (may use 1%, 2%, or whole milk)
- 1 packet yogurt starter (or 2 tbsp of existing yogurt with live cultures)
Directions
- Begin by pouring 1/2 cup of water into a medium sized sauce pan and heating it, this is to wet the pan. Now add the milk into the saucepan and heating it over medium heat until it reaches a boil, stir occasionally.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and allow the milk to cool to a temperature between 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit (this may take about 30-40 minutes).
- While in the sauce pan, add the starter or yogurt: If opting for a yogurt starter, sprinkle the contents of the starter packet on top and whisk thoroughly. Alternatively, if using existing yogurt, whisk in 2 tablespoon of yogurt.
- Pour the milk-yogurt mixture into clean glass jars, adjusting the quantity based on the jar size.
- Cover the jars with 1-2 dish towels each and place them in an unused microwave or oven for an incubation period of 6-8 hours. The longer the incubation, the firmer and tangier the yogurt will be, as well as promoting the formation of more beneficial bacteria.
- Upon completion of the incubation, remove the glass jars and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours before using. Your homemade yogurt is ready to be enjoyed!
- Serve it plain or with your favorite toppings like fruit, honey, or granola.
- Remember to save a small amount of this batch to use as a starter for your next homemade yogurt adventure!
